5. To inspire an ongoing interest in the natural world.

Basic Classroom Policy:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

–Aristotle

“Make it a goal to reduce bad habits & increase good habits.” – Mr. Hoogasian

Course and Classroom Requirements:

  1. Bring to class everyday:
    1. Textbook
    2. Something to take notes with [subject paper notebook, tablet, laptop (anything but your phone)].
    3. Writing Utensils (for worksheets, notes, labs…preferably blue, black or pencil only. Colored pencils and highlighters can be helpful, too…)
    4. Completed assignments
    5. Folder for graded assignments and other handouts.

  1. School policies extend to the classroom.  READ your handbook (no gum, food, etc.)
  2. Late work... see handbook p.18: “Work Missed Due to Absence It is the responsibility of the student to make up all tests, quizzes and assignments missed because of absence within a reasonable time as determined by the teacher.  All makeup work, including tests and quizzes, will be made up after school; students should be prepared to make up tests, quizzes, and assignments on the day they return to school.  It is the student’s responsibility to schedule the makeup sessions with his/her teachers to complete tests, quizzes, and assignments.  Work not completed during this given time will be assessed a zero (0).  Students who are truant or who have cut classes will not be allowed to make up missed work. Work Missed Due to Unexcused Tardies or Dismissals Students will not be allowed to make up any work missed due to an unexcused tardy or dismissal.”

  1. Laboratory expectations and behavior are on a separate paper and must be reviewed, and signed by parents and students. This represents a CONTRACT between student and teacher that defines a safe and appropriate laboratory behavior.

  1. Every student must complete an Independent Science Project by themselves. More details will be provided mid-late September.

  1. Failure to cooperate with reasonable teacher requests, gum chewing, littering, or any violation of school rules will result in the appropriate disciplinary action and documentation of the incident. Multiple violations could affect a student’s ability to participate in certain class activities like review games, lab experiments, or other special lesson privileges as well as affect the grade***:

Grading Policy: Point System:

  1. Every assignment will be worth X amount of points.
  2. The more challenging or complex the assignment, the more points it will be worth.
  3. The quality and accuracy of the work done will determine how many points are earned out of the max. (There will be rubrics!!!)
    1. Examples: HW – 1pt. completed on time = earn the 1pt. not completed on time = 0pt.
    2. Quiz with 10 M.C. questions - 10pts; 6/10 correct = 6pts… don’t like that grade?? SEE ME for extra help or additional “bonus” work.
  4. A list of assignments, dates assigned and due dates can be found at:

https://mrhoogasiansscienceclass.yolasite.com/

  1. Progress and Quarter Report grades will be determined by % of Points Earned/Points Available.
  2. There will be some opportunities each quarter to earn back lost points like team review games and additional homework or independent research.
  3. Students will be encouraged to keep track of their own grades to help keep them on task and be aware of what they are missing.
  4. ***bonus points could be deducted from total points earned for failure to adhere to basic expectations or habitual breaking of school rules.
  5. Except for legitimate absences from class, no HW will be accepted late. As for other assignments, students must make sufficient in-class progress on tasks given each day. The only absolute deadlines for “late” work are when grades close for progress reports and report cards. (Consult the school calendar for dates & see p.18 of the handbook).
