Course Objectives: Students will be able…
1. To understand the relationships among Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and society.
2. To understand various life, physical, earth and space science concepts, processes and ideas.
3. To develop the use of critical thinking skills and the ability to solve problems by applying logical reasoning and the scientific method.
4. To inspire an ongoing interest in the natural world.
5. To perform scientific experiments and activities with a curious, observant, and creative mind.
Basic Classroom Policy:
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
–Aristotle
“Make it a goal to reduce bad habits & increase good habits.” – Mr. Hoogasian
Course/Classroom Requirements/Expectations:
1. Abide by all rules and policies as stated in the parent/student handbook.
2. Respect & Patience: Mr. Hoogasian’s rule of 1 = only 1 person per group speaks at a time. If he is speaking, everyone else is listening. If a student is speaking, everyone else is listening. Wait for your time to speak.
3. Be prepared for each class: on time with notebook, writing utensil, completed assignments, etc.
4. Failure to cooperate with reasonable teacher requests, gum chewing, littering, or any violation of school rules will result in the appropriate disciplinary action and documentation of the incident. Multiple violations could affect a student’s ability to participate in certain class activities like review games, lab experiments, or other special lesson privileges as well as affect the grade***:
Grading Policy: Point System:
- Every assignment will be worth X amount of points.
- The more challenging or complex the assignment, the more points it will be worth.
- The quality and accuracy of the work done will determine how many points are earned out of the max. (There will be rubrics!!!)
- Examples: HW – 1pt. completed on time = earn the 1pt. not completed on time = 0pt.
- Quiz with 10 M.C. questions - 10pts; 6/10 correct = 6pts… don’t like that grade?? SEE ME for extra help or additional “bonus” work.
- A list of assignments, dates assigned and due dates can be found at:
https://mrhoogasiansscienceclass.yolasite.com/
- Progress and Quarter Report grades will be determined by % of Points Earned/Points Available.
- There will be some opportunities each quarter to earn back lost points like team review games and additional homework or independent research.
- Students will be encouraged to keep track of their own grades to help keep them on task and be aware of what they are missing.
- ***bonus points could be deducted from total points earned for failure to adhere to basic expectations or habitual breaking of school rules.
- Except for legitimate absences from class, no HW will be accepted late. As for other assignments, students must make sufficient in-class progress on tasks given each day. The only absolute deadlines for “late” work are when grades close for progress reports and report cards. (Consult the school calendar for dates & see p.18 of the handbook).
